Story
The story of how a young Donald Trump started his real estate business in the 1970s and 1980s in New York City with the help of infamous attorney Roy M. Cohn. Roger Stone, a longtime associate of Donald Trump and Roy M. Cohn, admitted that Jeremy Strong’s representation of Cohn was “uncanny in its accuracy.” [From the trailer] Roy Cohn: Rule Three: No matter what happens, you declare victory and never admit defeat.

Since “The Apprentice” (released in 2024; 120 inches) begins in the 1970s, a young Donald Trump is spotted at the Face restaurant by professional fixer Roy Cohn. For reasons that are unclear and never really explained, Cohn decides to take Trump under his wing, and Trump becomes an “apprentice.” At this point, there are less than 10 minutes left in the film. A few notes: This is the latest film by Iranian director Ali Abbasi (“Limit”).
It brings to the big screen a period of Trump’s life that spans approximately 15 years (1972-1987)
If you’ve been following politics in this country for the past 9 years, starting from the moment Trump descended the escalator at Trump Tower to announce his candidacy for president, nothing in the film is a big surprise because it simply (re)confirms what we know about Trump. The magic is that it is presented as if you were a fly on the wall. I can’t say enough about Sebastien Stan’s incredible performance, whose authenticity will blow your mind. The rest of the cast is also incredible, including Jeremy Strong (as Cohn) and aspiring Bulgarian actress Maria Bulkova (as Ivana).

You won’t be surprised when I mention that the film has been criticized by Trump and MAGA extremists (without watching the film, of course), and Trump’s lawyers have tried everything they can to stop the film from being released in the US, but to no avail. “The Apprentice” premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it received immediate acclaim. The film currently has a 77% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which seems about right to me. The film opened in US theaters this weekend, and I couldn’t wait to see it.
The Saturday afternoon screening where I saw this film at an arthouse here in Cincinnati was well attended, about 25-30 people
